James Bay Community Market Volunteer Positions – old

Are you interested in volunteering for the James Bay Market Society?

At the James Bay Market each week volunteers provide information to the public about the market, the outlying community and Victoria and Vancouver Island to the many tourists. Moreover you can help our Market manager in assisting vendors, selling coffee, entertaining children all while listening to great live music !!!

The Market is such a great place to be on a Saturday in James Bay, that many loyal volunteers return season after season.

The James Bay Community Market is an open air, rain or shine market operating on the corner of Menzies and Superior in James Bay every Saturday, May 5th to September 29th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Volunteers are wonderful people who help make the market happen.

    Volunteer Positions:

    All of these volunteer positions are under the supervision of our market manager and training and detailed job descriptions are provided. Our hours are flexible and we understand volunteers cannot attend every market.

    Vendor Set-up assistant: Requires some physical strength and patience.

    • Time: 7:30am – 9:00am
    • Should be able to erect and carry a 25 lb. tent and vendor totes
    • Assisting in the Set Up for our vendors who need assistance
    • Assist the vendors at Market start by helping unload their products, tents and tables from their vehicles to their assigned vending space.
    • Direct Vendors in the removal of their vehicles from the loading zones to parking areas.

    This position does not include placing of product, unpacking of vendors’ goods etc.

    Vendor Tear-Down Assistant: Requires some physical strength and patience.

    • Time: 3:00pm– 4:00pm
    • Assisting in the tear-down for our vendors who need assistance
    • Assist the vendors at Market end by helping load their products, tents and tables back into their vehicles.

    No packing of vendor product is required

    Info & Coffee Kiosks

    Both the information and coffee kiosks are located together in one area. Combined, these positions require lots of interaction with the public and our vendors. If you enjoy meeting people from all around the world, these positions are for you!

    Info Kiosk: Requires Fluent English and some basic knowledge of the James Bay area and the Downtown Tourist area

    • Time(s): Morning Shift 8:30am – 12:00pm, Afternoon Shift 11:45 am – 3.30 pm
    • The Info Kiosk is a hub of activity as we welcome residents and visitors to our community market each week. Our visitors are mostly new to the area or tourists.
    • We stock a reasonable amount of tourist information including maps, tourist publications and James Bay info including our newspaper and brochures from the major James Bay Organizations and the City Vibe.
    • You will assist in the set up (morning shift) and pack up of the kiosk (afternoon shift).

    Coffee Kiosk: Requires Fluent English and basic cash handling

    • Time(s): Morning Shift 8:30am – 12:00pm, Afternoon Shift 11:45am – 3:30pm
    • The Coffee Kiosk is our markets’ major fund raiser. This area is quite busy and is a great way to meet new people from the area and all around the world.
    • You will assist in the set up (morning shift) and pack up of the kiosk (afternoon shift).
    • Prepare and serve coffee, tea and water to the vendors and general public including making change and balancing the cash.

    We are seeking volunteers for a flexible 3 to 4 hour period preferably from either 10:00 am to 1:00 pm or 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for our children’s activity tent. Some proficiency in the English language is required.

    We provide record of attendance and letters of compliance at your request.


    Because these students’ English is limited and the students are often shy, we ask that you provide a supervisor who can communicate with them in their language and in English in order to assist the students in their duties as they interact with the children that attend our market. Each week a new craft is prepared by the children’s tent supervisor but we need assistance with implementing this craft program.

    We provide record of attendance and letters of compliance on the student’s request.

    Children’s Tent Volunteer Job Description:

    • As all children are to be accompanied by an adult, this is not a babysitting service.
    • We provide a different craft project for each market. You will assist the children in completing the craft.
    • You will read stories to the children from storybooks provided by the market.
    • You will be asked to play and interact with the children.
    • At sessions end you will be asked to clean up all the craft items and place them into the appropriate containers and totes provided by the Market.
