The James Bay Market Society

In the spirit of community living in James Bay, the James Bay Market Society wants to promote the benefits of a local market with the intent to foster the uniqueness of this neighbourhood. The purposes of this society then, are as follows:

  • To encourage and develop an awareness of the importance of local agriculture, art and craft.
  • To encourage education about the environment, healthy living and organic farming.
  • To provide a direct sales outlet in the neighbourhood for locally produced goods including: hand-crafted items, art, produce and home prepared foods.
  • To provide an atmosphere that encourages community interaction and participation of the neighbourhood.
  • To increase awareness of the benefits of neighbourhood markets.

The James Bay Market Society sponsors:

  • The James Bay Community Market:

    A community market composed of farmers, crafters, food producers and service providers, located on the corner of Menzies St. and Superior St. in James Bay and which runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, rain or shine, every weekend from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in September inclusive.

  • The Dickens Fair:

    The Dickens Fair is one of Victoria’s oldest and best-loved Holiday craft fairs. Our curated Vancouver Island artisans offer a great variety of handmade and homemade products at affordable prices. Located in the James Bay Community School Center at 140 Oswego Street, Victoria BC V8V 2B1 it runs from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm on the first Saturday in December.

  • Victoria Seedy Saturday:

    Victoria Seedy Saturday is the official start to the gardening season in Victoria. With a focus on organic, sustainable gardening and food security, Seedy Saturday is your place to find the seeds, tools and information to make this year your best growing year yet. Included with each admission is access to a seed exchange, book exchange, children’s area and a full program of presentations and workshops which take place throughout the day. Topics range from how to grow a seed to specialized topics. Located at the Victoria Conference Centre, 720 Douglas Street, it runs from 10am – 4:00pm in mid-February.

You are invited to join our present members at our Annual General Meeting. The AGM announcement follows:

The JBMS board members are inviting you to the 2020 AGM for the James Bay Market Society (JBMS) which will be held at the New Horizons Senior Center located at 234 Menzies Street in James Bay, on Saturday, February 22, 2020. As only society members are allowed to vote at the AGM, please bring your completed 2020 membership form along with $20 either in cash or by cheque made payable to the James Bay Market Society. Memberships will be collected from 11:00am until 1:00pm at which time the meeting will commence. Download the Membership Application here, If you are unable to download this form, we will have blank forms available on that day.

We urge all members to attend as important decisions will be made regarding the running of your market, the 2020 budget and an election of the new board. Membership is what drives the market so please consider joining our board! However, if you are unable to attend please make sure that you send in your membership form along with a cheque for $20 to our Michigan address to be received by us no later than a week before the AGM date i.e. February 15th, 2020.

According to our constitution, if you have any new business, ideas or comments you would like discussed at the AGM they must be submitted in writing and sent by either email to board@jamesbaymarket.com or mailed to arrive at our mailing address: 547 Michigan Street, Victoria, V8V 1S5 NO LATER than February 14, 2020.

AFTER the meeting is adjourned, we will be accepting vendor application forms for the James Bay Community Market for the 2020 season. To speed up the process please bring these forms fully completed. Download the James Bay Community Market Vendor Application here. If you are unable to download this form, we will have blank forms available at the meeting.

For those vendors returning for the 2020 season but unable to attend the AGM please note your applications to vend at the JBCM must be received NO LATER than March 1st, 2020 either by email to board@jamesbaymarket.com or at our mailing address 547 Michigan Street, Victoria, V8V 1S5. We will commence the jury process for new vendors some time in early March.

Once again, please make sure that you make every effort to attend the AGM on February 22nd, 2020. Thank you.
